Hardanger Skyspace in Øystese, Norway

The exterior of the Hardanger Skyspace.

Up to 18 people can sit inside this permanent octagonal art installation, or “Skyspace,” by American artist James Turrell. The piece is one of a series of distinct works, each of which is designed to interact with the landscape around. This particular monolith overlooks the Hardanger Fjord.

The interior morphs across the color spectrum every sunrise and sunset, creating a dazzling, immersive space. Since the artwork reacts to the surrounding light and weather patterns, no two days are quite the same. Viewers can peer up through the elliptical oculus at the top and observe how the shifting colors within impact the perceived colors of the sky outside.
