In the last year or two, I’ve been having these really short nightmares that last a few seconds after waking up. They started off happening every couple of weeks/months and seem to be getting more frequent lately. The strange thing about them is that they’re always of me in my bed, as if I’m awake looking out into the darkness of my bedroom. In every single one, there’s always someone or something in the room with me. Once there was a woman kneeling on the floor next to my bed looking out the window, another a man hovering near the ceiling staring down at me. They’re usually just silhouettes as the room is always dark and I can’t make out any faces. These will literally last just seconds and always play out the same way: I survey the bedroom, squinting through the darkness and see an entity staring back at me. When I lock eyes with them, that’s when I feel this wave of fear wash over me and I suddenly wake up for real, usually sitting bolt upright. The part I hate the most though is the image is still burned in my brain that I swear I’m still seeing this thing for a few seconds before I realise it’s not really there and I’m no longer dreaming. It’s really creeping me out and this has happened several times in the last few weeks alone. The last couple of times, I actually shook my girlfriend awake and told her there was someone in the bedroom then realising I just had a nightmare. I know about sleep paralysis but I don’t think that’s it as I’m not having trouble waking up and don’t have the usual heavy feeling on my chest. Has anyone else experienced this?
