Sleep paralysis and astral projection?/u/Jknowsweird50

So, my oldest son called me this afternoon to tell me about his sleep paralysis incident last night. He’s only called me once before after an incident and he was a little freaked out. This one was definitely different and I wanted to share and see if anyone else has ever experienced something like this.

He’s had many sleep paralysis episodes. They have always been the same. Dark shadow figure with red eyes looming over him and he can’t speak or move. He describes it as a dementor waiting to suck out your soul. Never a fun thing to experience.

He is in the military and has had to move around a lot. He thought he had a timeline down that it would happen each time he moved to a new place. He did have an episode at his current home already so he didn’t expect to have another. Nor did he expect what happened this time.

He told me that he was having the same sleep paralysis where the figure is standing over him. But then he said all of a sudden, he was outside of his body watching it happen. He said he was mumbling in his sleep with the figure standing over him. His wife was trying to wake him up because his struggling in his sleep woke her up. All while he’s watching it. He thought to himself, I’m going to mess this thing up because it’s messing with me. So he yelled at it to get it’s attention. It turned and looked right at him. He started forward as to grab it and then just at he was reaching out for it, said he was back in his body and his wife woke him up.

He thought he was having a second layer dream. His words anyway. I’ve not heard of that term before. But this sounds more like astral projection to me. Has anyone ever experienced anything like this, especially during a sleep paralysis episode? He’s a very normal and logical person and understands sleep paralysis. But he’s never had a dream like this or out of body experience before.
