The Mwanga magicians of Tanzania/u/buffoonballs

This is a true story told to me by my family who live in Tanzania. It may sound nutty and strange to a lot of people, I myself couldn’t believe it when I was told by my family, but it is true and something that still happens (a bit rare now though) in the country of Tanzania.

A short brief about Tanzania and Africa in regards to the paranormal. Africans are huge believers of the paranormal, devils, demons, superstitious beings and the like. This culture has also influenced the use of magic and establishing a connection with demons and devils, many (usually smaller) African villages and towns will often have a witch doctor/wizard/witch who try to scam people for money by “predicting” their future and such. Anyway, I feel it’s important to talk about this culture before I begin the story because belief and presence of the paranormal is taken very seriously in Tanzania, it’s quite a sensitive topic.

The Mwanga people of Tanzania are a very strange group of magicians who their motives are unknown to the general public. They are quite known in the rural towns and usually villages of the country, not so much the cities. These people, are human beings, just like me and you, who have to take part in some magic/ritual in order to be accepted into the Mwanga community. Yes I say community because they are quite a few of them, enough to form a community. However, not much is known about them and NO ONE knows who they are. My aunt could be a Mwanga and I would never know. I must say, not so much is known about them because they are a very low-key group of magicians and you will never see them, if you do, then it would be a traumatic experience(i’ll talk about this later).

Now this is where it gets strange, what exactly is a Mwanga? what do they do? Mwangas’ are human magicians who are active late at night, with the help of their magic, they are invisible, that’s why we cannot see them and we do not know who they are. I know it’s unbelievable, but yes, they are invisible human beings at night. Also, if you DO see them, they will be naked. Mwangas’ go to cemeteries and dig up, and eat the dead bodies of the buried. But their method of transportation to the cemeteries is the creepy part.

They enter homes, and perform their magic on sleeping victims. If their magic has been performed to you while you are asleep, you will not feel a thing, but will do as they command. They will command you to get on all fours, like an animal, and they will mount you like a donkey. If their magic has been performed to you, you will be oblivious the entire night and will also be invisible. Once the Mwanga has mounted you, he/she will command you to take them to a cemetery, so they can proceed to eat dead bodies. They will be on your back, as you are on your knees and hands moving like a donkey, all the way to the cemetery.

Once they have finished with whatever it is they do in the cemetery, they will take you back to your home, still mounting you, and ensure you return to your bed, and they leave. The next morning, you will feel broken and tired because of the pressure on your knees and back from the Mwanga mounting you. You will have no idea what happened, because their magic will make you oblivious.

Again, you and the Mwanga will not be seen by anyone throughout this journey due to their magic of making both of you invisible. They also ride you as they are naked. People who believe in such things will know they have fallen victim to a Mwanga if they wake up feeling broken, and feel pressure on their joints and back.

The strange part is, this is absolutely strange, even to the locals. Because, what the hell is their motive? why do they enter homes and ride people only to eat dead bodies at the cemetery? I have asked the same questions to my Uncle who has told me the story but could not get a reply. Until today, this phenomenon of the Mwanga behavior has not been explained. There is not enough information because these magicians are extremely discreet.

However, to be accepted to become a Mwanga, some things are known by the general public. First of all, no one knows where to find the concerned person/group of the Mwanga community to request to join them, I guess if you are creepy enough and determined to join them, you will find a way.

Second, if you have passed their initiation or whatever, there are 3 strict rules that Mwangas’ must follow. The Mwangas’ are not allowed to steal from their victim or harm them in anyway. If they do this, they will be exposed by their community and either punished badly in some way or banished, I guess this abides to their motive of being very discreet. They are also not allowed to be exposed or seen by their victims or the general public, which is why they perform their magic to become unseen.

And third, (which I find the creepiest) they are only allowed to enter their victims homes through a corner, they do not break into the home or pick the lock or enter through the doors/windows, this is for some reason prohibited by the Mwanga community. They use some sort of magic, to enter your room through any corner, so a 90 degree point in your room. I find this extremely creepy because i honestly believe in the Mwangas to some extent because I lived in Tanzania and have personally seen some paranormal shit there myself. And to know that these people use magic to enter your room non-violently and silently, has made me very creeped out. Also, I would like to add that if you have a light on in your room, they will never come to you. They only come in the dark.

The Mwangas’ have been present for quite a few centuries, and the Africans who knew about them long ago, have found the secret to keep them away. They build their homes (usually small homes during those times) in the shape of a circle, which means the Mwanga has no place to enter from a corner, and thus cannot enter the home. If you look at some of the old Tanzanian village homes, and still some to this day too, some people build their little village homes (made out of mud) in the shape of a circle just for this reason.

My uncle told me a very vague story that happened long ago about his friend who once entered his mothers room to find his grandmother performing Mwanga magic on his mother, she somehow ran away (very vague explanation). Turns out his grandmother was a Mwanga and was going to take her for a ride to the cemetery that might. I believe the Mwanga magic somehow does not work in homes as he could see his grandmother as she wasn’t invisible.

Anyway, I felt like sharing this story here because it really intrigued me and creeped me out. I would just like to say that Mwangas are quite rare at this time but maybe because we don’t here about them much, idk. Again, they are very discreet and strange.
