Exorcisms have always confused me.
Across the globe, many cultures believe in possession by outside forces. A catholic exorcism is not the only ritual focused on riding a person of a malevolent presence.
However, based off the media, exorcisms are always focused on the catholic faith. The demons are negatively affected by holy symbols, water blessed by ordained ministers burn them and they can't speak the words of the Bible.
BUTTT... what if a non-catholic is possessed by a demon? Can the rituals rooted in Indigenous shamanism (for example) expel a demon?
And what about cultures where possession isn't based on evil spirits. What about the Voodoo religion....I am not the most educated in this faith, so feel free to educate me on this topic ( I am always open to learn new things), but from my understanding possession can be seen positively - an opportunity to commune with ancestors and divine spirits? .
Please share your beliefs about possession and spirituality . I am interesed in a cross cultural perspective.
