the ghost that tried to strangle my friend/u/paranormah

Back in 2018, I had just turned 20 and wanted to splurge for my birthday. So I invited a few friends to paintball, including my old friend Reign, her boyfriend Jackie, my boyfriend, who I'll call Fred, and my best friend, Evie. We all met at a nearby mall and crammed into Reign's car; she had offered to drive us all.

I don't know if this was connected, but my boyfriend said something weird. We were on the highway when he turned to Reign and said, "Hey, can you slow down? I have a bad feeling that something bad is going to happen." Which was strange to ask, but Reign obliged and slowed down to the speed limit (she was going ten over, which is permitted where I live). We made it to the paintballing place without any issues and proceeded to have a great time -- Fred even shot me in the spine, which hurt up until the next day.

Eventually, it was nearing the end of the day, and we were all tired. So we all agreed it was time to go, but Reign suggested we all book a motel room and spent the night together. But Fred and Jackie said no; they were both tired and wanted to go home, which left us girls to hang out instead. So we found a pretty run-down motel for cheap and spent a few hours watching horror movies. Halfway through the second movie, we started to feel like there was a presence in the room with us, but we chalked it up to the horror movies.

Now, a fun fact about Evie, she has an attachment. A shadow figure has been haunting her family for years -- it started with her mom and weirdly got passed down to her. That night, when feeling the presence, both Evie nor I didn't think it was her ghost friend; like I previously said, we just thought it was our nerves from the horror movies. After we had finished the final film, we all decided it was best to go to bed. The presence we were feeling was getting a little too much for us -- the air felt heavy, and whatever was in the room with us felt angry. We assumed sleeping would help eliminate the feeling of being watched and the overall nasty gut feeling we got.

Evie and I shared a bed while Reign took up the other. I usually have a hard time falling asleep in a new environment, but at that moment, I was having a more challenging time than usual. The odd time I did manage to dose off, I'd have these strange dreams of swirling shadows -- no actual shape to them, just whirlpools of darkness. On the other hand, Reign seemed like she had a fantastic dream; she was moaning and making a lot of noise overall. Well, that mindset changed when she shot up and gasped for air. I sprung up myself and asked her what was wrong. That's when she started telling me about her dream.

In her dream, she was being pursued by a shadow figure. She recalled how terrified she felt, hence the moaning, and no matter how fast she ran, the thing would catch up to her. Eventually, it knocked her to the ground, like it was fed up with the chase, and wrapped its fingers around her throat. She couldn't breathe and started thrashing around, trying to break free from its grasp. But nothing worked; Reign could feel herself dying. She thought that was the end, but luckily, she woke up before she died. As she was telling me this, I turned on the light and. Evie had woken up and was listening to her retell her nightmare.

During her recollection, I noticed red marks forming on her neck, same as her wrists, arms, and legs; just about any visible patch of skin had some form of mark on it. I pointed it out to her once she finished her story and asked if she usually woke up with bruises and marks on her. Reign looked somewhat startled and said no. The three of us decided it was probably time for us to leave, and we hastily packed our bags and piled into Reign's car. We started to feel better once we were far from the motel. Evie and I began to tell her about the shadow figure that haunted Evie, and I told her it had once threatened my life in a dream but never physically attacked us. Reign nervously laughed it off, and I took it as a cue to drop the subject.

Reign and I don't talk anymore -- I moved across the country, and we fell out of touch, but I'll never forget the look of fear as she recalled her dream to us. The shadow figure still haunts Reign, but it has never tried to strangle someone in a dream, at least not that we know of.
