One summer I was taking a much needed vacation on Montauk Point, the eastern most tip of Long Island, NY. My first day dawned a glorious summer; warm ocean breeze, shimmering skies and dancing white caps completed the idyllic scene. Not too many folks around that long stretch of white sand on the edge of town and I was longing for a dip in the Atlantic after a grinding winter of work.
The waves were much higher and stronger than anticipated; immediately, large breakers knocked me over, forcing me to the sandy bottom. Over and over again, walls of green and white water forced me down.. my bikini top is stripped to my waist...time slowed...I remember at one point looking up from the bottom to a massive roof of green water towering above my head; Then I started to take on seawater and it crossed my mind that this is going to be it--I was drowning. But just when I was beginning to surrender, it became clear, I was being pushed into shore... bit by excrutiating bit, wave after wave...
Still floundering in the shallows, terra firma almost within reach if I can make it, I very clearly saw a beautiful, slender, red-headed woman wearing a black one-piece bathing suit flanked by two identical red-head infants playing at the waters edge..."Help Lifeguard!" I tried to shout...the woman looked directly at me, smiling in an unconcerned and inscrutable manner. She gave no indication of hearing me. She speaks not a word....but shortly, a lifeguard appeared asking if I need help... But the crisis is past, the ocean has given me up today...utterly exhausted and shaken, I manage to crawl the last few inches to safety under my own steam...
I want to thank the woman in black, but she is nowhere to be seen. Sight lines for miles around, but there are no red-headed women on the beach. There are no cherub-like infants around. I have the distinct impression that she is some sort of a guardian angel. I'm always going to believe that and I'll never forget her.
