Possible paranormal experience?/u/A_Magical_Phoenix

So I'm not totally sure if this was paranormal or just my imagination, but it's been bothering me since it happened.

A couple of days ago I had to be out of my apartment for 24 hours for some work to be done. A friend of mine offered to let me stay in one of her spare rooms for the night so I wouldn't need to get a hotel.

Her house is an old 1950s house. It's much darker inside at night than my apartment. I don't even have to turn on lights to go to the washroom but in her place, the room was so dark I couldn't see anything.

So I went to bed probably an hour after my friend had, it was definitely after midnight. As I was laying in bed, it felt like there was someone was present nearby. I knew it wasn't my friend because I hadn't heard anything and the floors creak, as they do in old houses. I open my eyes and see a dark shadow that was somehow darker than the pitch dark room.

Honestly I was scared. But I did manage not to scream, thankfully. I clamped my eyes shut and I whispered something like "I'm not here to cause any problems. I'm just staying the night and I'm leaving tomorrow." I opened my eyes and the shadow was gone.

There is always the possibility it was my imagination: it was late, I was tired and stressed from the stuff at my apartment, and I was in an unfamiliar place. But I have never seen a shadow in the dark before and I grew up in a house much older than that that I'm pretty sure was haunted (it was an old railway worker boarding house). I do know it wasn't a dream because I have aphantasia and I don't dream in images.
