TL;DR. I applied essential oils as a sleep aid and had a terrible reaction including a vivid “demonic” nightmare and extreme anxiety. I’m curious about how the oils might have triggered it.
The backstory: Several years ago, I needed help sleeping. I found a recipe online for blending essential oils as a sleep aid. The only oil I recall in the mix was Vervain. I applied a little of the mix behind my neck and shoulders and went to bed.
The dream that night: I was an unseen observer in a spacious, opulent living room. Seated in the living room was large family—maybe 8 or 10 people. They were parents, siblings and grandparents. All were very good looking and very well-dressed. They were seated in silence.
I became aware that each person in the room hated all the others with a deep, “inhuman” hatred. And each person was actively plotting the murder of all the others.
I was instantly horror-struck with their terrible hatred and treachery. At that moment, a huge black figure arose from the back of the room. It unfolded black wings, rose to the ceiling, began glide silently over this family and in my direction. I woke up in a state of terror.
The aftermath: The oil I had applied the night before smelled cloying and awful and I raced to the shower to wash it off. I couldn’t shake my anxiety. I went outside and walked around for 2 hours. I was feeling so terrible, I thought I was having a nervous breakdown. I decided that, if I wasn’t better by afternoon, I was going to the emergency room at a local psych hospital and asking for help.
But, I did recover. I washed all my sheets and pajamas and dumped the rest of the oil mixture down the toilet.
Disclaimer: I’m not mentally ill. I rarely have nightmares. I’m an open-minded skeptic about the supernatural, but this dream was FREAKY like nothing I have ever experienced before or since.
So, for people who believe in spiritual entities: can the use of essential oils trigger supernatural encounters? People once believed that witches applied magical ointments in order to fly on broomsticks. Perhaps they were really “flying” someplace but not literally? And, vervain has a sort of witchy reputation...
I’ve never heard anybody advise caution when using essential oils, have you?
