Experiences at my former work (long)/u/Grackle246

I used to intern at a state agency as part of their public education team. One half of the main building was offices, the other half was an interpretation center that had classrooms and exhibits. There was also a separate, warehouse-style building for shooting sports.

The first thing I noticed was the doors in the shooting sports building since I usually worked out there alone. It had two bathrooms with heavy metal doors. They would slam shut in an otherwise silent building and scare the shit out of me. I assumed it was pressure changes in the building and did my best to brush it off. Then I started noticing that I would hear the front door open and no one would come in. It was a very distinct sound, and many of my coworkers also heard it. The only other experiences I had in this building was when I would do maintenance. I tended to put on a podcast or music. I would notice that the building would start to get very loud. It would make some noise in the wind, but this was different. It would creak, the door sound would go, and sometimes it would sound like someone had knocked on the outside of the building. The first time it happened I already was suspicious of a haunting, so I paused my music and asked if there was a problem with my music taste. It was probably stupid to talk to whoever was there, but the noise stopped immediately. I started making the occasional comment to it after that.

The scariest experiences happened in the main building. The office end would have this recurring apparition that walked down an aisle of cubicles, then dissappear. It was normal to hear footsteps and doors close in the interpretation end of the building when no one else was there. All of this could have been coincidence or explained away in my mind, but then the most in depth experience happened.

There were four of us interns doing prep work on the interpretation side. It was pretty late; we all needed hours so we were there at 7 or 8 pm. The first thing that happened was the security system going off. We hadn't set it for the night, but just shrugged it off. It wasn't uncommon for one of the office staff to stop by and set the alarm on their way out. One of the other interns left after that and said that she felt like she was being watched all the way out. The rest of us started hearing doors opening and closing. It was quiet, so we stood there in silence trying to hear. Then, we heard what sounded like a conversation between two men. We had already locked up for the night, so we assumed there was someone who snuck in. We swept that building twice looking for anyone else who might have been there, but there was nothing and all the doors were locked. We were freaked out and decided to clean up and leave. We did one final sweep of the interpretation area and found one door that was unlocked. I had checked that door myself on the previous sweep and it was locked then.

The three of us were just about to leave when the night janitors came in. They calmed us down a bit and we told them about our night. Turns out, the janitors knew the place was haunted. They had experienced similar things and had even had their equipment messed with. The janitors had a theory that it was a recently deceased janitor that loved his job and the guy the shooting sports building was named after. I stayed at that internship for a few more months and heard footsteps and doors regularly, but nothing felt malicious. It felt more like they liked to mess with the interns. None of the full time staff believed us and nothing really bad happened. It felt lighthearted in the end.
