Eerie screaming and running woman./u/Curious-Somewhere269

I live in a quiet, country town that has a medium population. It is well known by the locals and people moving here, the northern side of the town (over a bridge) is not the best place to live, due to higher crime rates and denser bushland. Most of the northern side of the town is run down, as it is a low-income area. I live in this section of the town, but in a nicer area on a steep hill, with a lot of bushland surrounding the houses. Not many people live in the direct area around me, so it becomes quiet and still at night. One night a few months ago, at around 12-1 am, I heard a strange noise outside, upon opening my window it became very clear it was the sound of a woman screaming, specifically screeching and crying for help. She could also be heard saying stop or no. I was spooked but did not think much of it at the time.

The next morning around midday I believe, the screaming started again, but louder. This time I called the police, as I feared a domestic abuse situation could be going on. 2 armed officers arrived at my house and questioned me, and then began a search of the neighborhood. The screaming had stopped at this point, and the local police station had received more calls from neighbors. After searching the neighborhood extensively, they could not find any evidence of a domestic dispute. A woman did come forth and say the noises could've been excused as her yelling at her hyperactive dog, but it was deemed as an unlikely story. There were some days of silence, but the screams did continue consistently for a little while.

After reaching out to some friends in the area, it seems similar screams were heard in an area close to mine, less than 2km away. This time a woman running down the street was the origin of the screaming, which lead him to believe she was running from someone so the police were called once again, for possibly domestic abuse.

The screaming in my neighbourhood continued for a while, and it was more prominent in the later hours of the day, around midnight. The screaming was always similar in that it was always the same person, and that they were screaming no, help, stop, etc.

A few people have speculated that this may be paranormal due to the fact that extremely close to my property is the abandoned property of a women who passed nearly a decade ago, which no trace. Her car is still there, house is still locked and from the window you can tell it hasn't been cleared out, which leads me to believe that none of her family has yet to claim the property. For a while after her death mail was still delivered to her house, and the grass was cut sometimes, but this all stopped. Me and a few others have tried to get into the house before, but both doors are difficult to open or kick down. Some people have also said they feel uneasy or ill near the bullding.

This could easily be a case of domestic abuse or someone playing some joke, but the nature of the screams and the running women has me speculating.
